Accomplished Italian pianist Fabio Bidini comes to campus today to share his musical experience with students and Norman residents. Bidini presents a piano master class at 1:30 p.m. today in Paul F. Sharp Concert Music Hall in Catlett Music Center.
"In a master class, the artist is working with advanced pianists in a lesson format and [Bidini] is giving his ideas on interpretation and technique," said Jane Mcgrath, coordinator of the OU School of Music's keyboard department.
"Bidini is a really dynamic performer. Very, very exciting. He brings a passion to the music."
Admission to the class is free and open to the public. Repertoire to be performed includes musical influences such as Mozart and Beethoven.
Bidini's approach is characterized by polished elegance, blended with emotion and colored with the unexpected.
"It's easier for me to express myself through music than through words," Bidini said.
A master class is similar to a private lesson but with other people in the room listening. Students will take turns performing, while Bidini acts as an instructor, providing feedback and suggestions for improving the musical piece.
Born in Arezzo, Italy, Bedini began studying piano when he was five years old. After 10 years of private study, he enrolled in the Santa Cecila Conservatory in Rome where he graduated magna cum laude and then went on to study composition at the Florence Conservatory.
Fabio Bidini has performed around the world, including appearances with the Philharmonic Orchestra of London, the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra, the Philharmonic Orchestra of Prague and the Budapest Festival Orchestra.
He has also performed in the United States with the St. Louis, Dallas, Ft. Worth, Columbus, Colorado, Virginia and Arkansas Symphonies.
He serves as the artist-in-residence at the University of Texas in Arlington.
He has won first prize in 11 of Italy's most prestigious national piano competitions, as well as receiving top prize in eight international competitions. He has released ten recordings on BMG and EPR records, Classichord, Musiktrasse and True Sound, which he founded.
Bidini can also be seen Saturday night at The Civic Center in Oklahoma City when he joins the Oklahoma City Philharmonic for the opening of their classics season.
"It's a real special opportunity to have Bidini on campus, performing live in front of our students," Mcgrath said.
