How do religious groups reinvent themselves to attract new audiences? How do they rebrand their messages and recast their rituals to widen their community base? Join us for a talk about the global re-branding of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness and learn about the ways in which devotees are transforming their temple-based religious movement into one based in meditation studios, mindfulness lounges and more-all for the sake of attracting new publics.

Nicole Karapanagiotis is Chair of the Department of Philosophy and Religion at Rutgers University, Camden. Her research areas of specialization include devotional Hinduisms, theistic Vedanta philosophies, religion and digital media and religion and marketing. She is the author of Branding Bhakti: Krishna Consciousness and the Makeover of a Movement (Indiana University Press, 2021) and has published numerous articles in journals such as the International Journal of Hindu Studies and Nova Religio, among others. She is the 2018 recipient of Helen Crovetto Award for Excellence in the Study of New Religious Movements with Ties to South Asia and the 2021 recipient of the Rutgers University Presidential Fellowship for Teaching Excellence Award.
