Syrup to serve breakfast for dinner to benefit local charity

The downtown Norman breakfast boutique, Syrup, will break its usual only-open-for-breakfast trend and serve breakfast for dinner May 2. All tips from the event will be given to local charity Center for Children & Families. 

The event will take place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The idea to open the bustling brunch spot for dinner originated from staff member Chloe Spor about six months ago, Spor said. 

Syrup's "overall atmosphere" sparked Spor's idea to host a Breakfast for Dinner event at the restaurant at least once a month going forward, she said. The business is owned by two missionaries who live in South Africa, and Syrup is very involved in giving to the South African area. 

While Syrup's goal to make an impact globally is admirable, Spor wanted to make an impact on the Norman community as well, she said. 

"My goal is to impact locally, and we can help more people in our community — giving to a charity made sense to me," Spor said. 

Spor volunteered with Center for Children & Families during high school, which made her familiar with the organization and more apt to choose it as Syrup's first Breakfast for Dinner beneficiary, she said.

Matt Kossler, Syrup manager, said Spor has done "an amazing job" organizing the event.

Syrup hopes to pick different Norman charities to donate to in the future Breakfast for Dinner events, Kossler said.

"If anyone wants to partner with us, we would love to take a look at that, as well," Kossler said. 

The restaurant is prepping for the event just as they would any other morning shift, and the menu will remain the same. Syrup's call-ahead policy is in place for tonight and Kossler suggests customers call an hour to 30 minutes ahead of when they wish to be seated in order to cut down on wait time, he said.
