The School of Visual Arts is showcasing graduating seniors' best projects, the culmination of a year's hard work, in the Lightwell Gallery at the Fred Jones Center through May 14 as part of the senior capstone exhibition.
About 50 artists' and designers' works are on display in the exhibition, said Beau Murphy, visual communication senior.
The first floor of the art building features work by the school’s designers, who create graphic designs geared toward advertising and image-making. The second floor displays work by fine arts majors and mixed media artists, Murphy said.
Photo installations, sculptures, printmaking, abstract paintings and videos are among the works on display, and each artist’s work is accompanied by a portfolio book. The portfolio books allow visitors to get a closer look at the artist’s work and see it in print, Murphy said.
Murphy is exhibiting graphic designs, advertisements and experimental art videos he made for various classes, he said.
“I guess I’m most excited because it just kind of feels good to be able to have physical things to show and be proud of, after having spent so much time working on school,” Murphy said.
The capstone exhibit also gives visitors an opportunity to view the “pinnacle” of students’ abilities, and to experience a wide range of art, Murphy said.
“It’s not like a 20-page paper where someone would have to read your paper to see your capstone,” Murphy said. “They can look at a book or read your banner or see your video, and they can see where you’ve spent your time.”
The exhibition’s opening reception will take place from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. May 7 in the Lightwell Gallery at the Fred Jones Center.
Many of the artists and designers will be present at the receptions. Visitors will have the opportunity to ask the exhibiting students questions about their work, as well as eat hors d’oeuvres, Murphy said.
