OU women's gymnastics: Maggie Nichols, Olivia Trautman earn Big 12 weekly honors

Junior Maggie Nichols and freshman Olivia Trautman have been named Big 12 gymnasts of the week.

Both Sooners gave stellar performances in No. 1 Oklahoma’s close win over No. 2 UCLA on Sunday.

Nichols anchored the uneven bars event for the Sooners, tallying a 9.925 to cap off what head coach K.J. Kindler called their “best bars of the year.” The Sooners totaled a 49.575 on bars.

She added a 9.975 from the anchor spot in balance beam. Nichols’ clutch performance on beam helped salvage an uncharacteristic sooner beam performance and prevented UCLA from taking the lead heading into the final rotation.

Trautman was named Newcomer of the Week for her vault and floor routine.

Trautman scored a 9.85 to help the Sooners to a strong 49.425 score on vault. She added a 9.95 to anchor a meet-clinching floor performance by the Sooners. Oklahoma tallied a 49.575 on floor.

“Floor has been a work-in-progress for us and I feel like we arrived today,” said Kindler after the meet.

The Sooner duo shared the honor with Denver’s Maddie Karr.

Oklahoma is on the road this weekend, heading to Ann Arbor to face Michigan. The meet will take place at 11 a.m. CT on Saturday, March 9th.
