The No. 1 Sooners won their sixth consecutive Big 12 Championship title with a 197.850 against No. 7 Denver (196.475), No. 22 West Virginia (195.575) and Iowa State (195.500) in Frisco, Tx, according to SoonerSports.
The win marked Oklahoma's ninth Big 12 title under head coach KJ Kindler and 15th in program history. Kindler was awarded with co-Big 12 Coach of the Year.
Freshman Maggie Nichols scored her second perfect 10 on vault and holds the OU career record with six total in front of former Sooner Haley Scaman. She walked away with the Big 12 newcomer of the year while senior Chayse Capps was awarded with gymnast of the year and junior AJ Jackson received specialist of the year.
The team opened on the balance beam, the only event OU did not start on this season. Senior Charity Jones opened the rotation with a 9.85 and junior Natalie Brown walked away with her season best of 9.925. The Sooners led 49.450.
In the second rotation, the team moved to floor where Jackson anchored with a 9.95 (and has not scored lower for the past seven meets). OU continued its lead by 0.675 followed by Denver (98.150), West Virginia (97.600) and Iowa State (97.525).
On vault, Jones opened with a 9.825. Jackson took the No. 5 spot on the event and was followed by Nichols’s 10. The Sooners continued their lead with 148.225, but Iowa State took third over West Virginia by .025.
Capps opened on the uneven bars for the final rotation, matching her season-high of 9.9. Sophomore Brenna Dowell also matched her season-high of 9.95 after junior Stefani Catour’s 9.875.
The Sooners will be assigned to their campus site for the NCAA Regional competition March 20. The meets will be April 1 at Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Nebraska, Washington and West Virginia. The top two teams from each location will then compete in the 2017 NCAA Championships in St. Louis, Mo. April 14 and 15.
