...AIR QUALITY ALERT IN EFFECT FROM 10 AM TO 10 PM CDT FRIDAY...

The following statement was issued by the Oklahoma Department of
Environmental Quality.

An Air Quality Alert for Ozone has been issued for Friday, August 28
for the Oklahoma City Metropolitan area due to expected high
concentrations of ozone.

Public Health Recommendations: Persons with existing heart or
respiratory ailments should reduce physical exertion and outdoor
activity.

The general public is encouraged to help alleviate the problem by
reducing vehicle miles traveled by riding the bus, carpooling, or
avoiding unnecessary trips. The public is also asked to avoid
refueling during the morning and early afternoon hours, and to avoid
the use of two cycle engines such as lawn mowers, motorcycles, weed
trimmers, and outboard engines. It is also advised to limit outdoor
burning.

Oklahoma women's gymnastics: Sooners edge out Nebraska in Perfect 10 Challenge

Sophomore Bre Showers leaps on the beam Feb. 16,

The No. 1 Sooners (4-1) and No. 12 Cornhuskers (5-0) faced off in the annual Perfect 10 Challenge in Oklahoma City, with Oklahoma winning 196.425-196.175.

The Sooners came out hot with juniors Brenna Dowell and Alex Marks putting up matching 9.9s on vault. In all, the Sooners didn’t record anything lower than junior Nicole Lehrmann's 9.775 on the event. Oklahoma finished the first rotation leading by a close margin of 49.275-48.900 after a few rough landings on bars for Nebraska.

On bars, the Sooners put together three scores of 9.925 from freshman Anastasia Webb, senior Stefani Catour and Lehrmann, the reigning co-bar champion. Even with these performances, the Nebraska Cornhuskers followed closely behind by only .675.

The Sooners struggled on beam Friday with a falls from Catour (9.225) and Lehrmann (9.275). Senior Natalie Brown, who has been recovering from a surgery she had in December, made her season debut on beam Friday night but suffered balance issues as well, recording a 9.150. Sophomore Maggie Nichols scored a needed 9.950 on beam to net the Sooners a total of 48.150 for the event.

While Nebraska didn’t necessarily excel on floor, it was good enough to overtake the Sooners lead after those falls on beam. The Sooners trailed 146.950-147.050 with one rotation remaining.

"It's very difficult when your first performer falls, and after that happened tonight I think it really put pressure on for the whole lineup," said coach KJ Kindler. "I just don't think we showed a lot of mental fortitude there which is really unusual for our team."

The Sooners came out strong in the last rotation with sophomore Brehanna Showers and Dowell scoring 9.850s. Webb came out for her third performance of the night and put up a much needed 9.9 for the Sooners.

Just after, Nichols put up another 9.95 to match with her beam score. Senior AJ Jackson then went on to anchor with a 9.925, making this a very successful floor performance for Oklahoma and giving it the win.

The Sooners will be back in action next Friday when they take on West Virginia at 6:45 p.m. CT in Norman.
