The No. 1 Sooners claimed their seventh consecutive regional title on Saturday, securing a spot in the NCAA Championship for the 13th season in a row.
Oklahoma scored a 197.575 at the NCAA Iowa City Regional and claimed individual titles on all four events.
Junior Chayse Capps had a big night for OU, taking home three individual titles and being named South Central Region Gymnast of the Year. Capps placed first on vault with a 9.9 and first all-around with a 39.550. On beam, she tied for the top spot with sophomore Natalie Brown, freshman Nichole Lehrmann, Mollie Drenth of Iowa and Grace Williams of Nebraska.
With the highest score of the meet on any event (9.95), junior McKenzie Wofford claimed her first regional title on bars. Wofford helped the team tie the fifth-best bar total in program history with a 49.575.
Capps, Brown and Lehrmann claimed shares of the regional title on beam with scores of 9.9. Lehrmann’s 9.9 was a career high for the freshman, while Capps’ score became the 12th straight of 9.9 or better. OU totaled 49.425 on the event, matching their fourth best total on beam this season.
Sophomore A. J. Jackson took the top spot on floor with a 9.9. Four Sooners scored 9.85s to help Oklahoma finish the rotation with a 49.300 event total.
The Sooners finished the meet on vault, where Capps claimed the regional title with a score of 9.9. Senior Haley Scaman posted a 9.875, while seniors Hunter Price and Keeley Kmieciak added 9.85s to give OU a 49.275 event total.
No. 12 Nebraska scored a 196.550 to earn second place and advance to the national meet with the Sooners. Oklahoma heads into the meet as the No. 1 seed. On the first day of competition, in Semifinal II, the Sooners will look to make the program’s sixth Super Six appearance.
The 2016 NCAA Championships will be held in Fort Worth, Texas, on April 15 and 16.
