On the inside of quarterback Baker Mayfield’s new locker there is a list of 14 phrases that could help shape the Sooners' 2017 season.
Be fearless. Be relentless. Never give up.
The list is a series of reminders he uses as motivation. The redshirt senior said he had the list on a piece of paper when the team’s locker room was portable trailers. Now that Oklahoma has finished its stadium renovation, he was able to write it in dry erase marker on the wall of his locker, and he said he wrote it when he first got into the new locker room.
Be a great leader. Outwork everyone.
Mayfield said self motivation is important and this list is his way of doing that.
“It shouldn’t take anybody else or something else to happen for you to be motivated and work hard,” Mayfield said. “You’ve got to do it yourself and no matter what it takes.”
Not everything on the list is specific to football.
Be a great man. Inspire every day.
He also has some goals for the season on the list.
Get your team to Atlanta and finish. Be the best player in the country.
"You know my way of helping myself to get motivated is to write that list," Mayfield said. "You know read it, look at it every once in a while and just keep pushing myself."
He said the list is his "what's your why?" The things on it are daily reminders of what why he's there and what he wants to accomplish.
Make your family proud. Leave your legacy. Don’t have any regrets.
“Remind myself of why I’m there and what’s gotten me there,” Mayfield said. “Just to keep working hard and put my head down and not look up.”
Hold the rope. Stay consistent.
“I was able to put that up so it was right there for me to see — and then everybody else to see — that I’m holding myself to a high standard and reminding myself of motivation every day,” Mayfield said.
