In comparison to fellow players in his recruiting class, freshman guard Trae Young went vastly unnoticed until records started to fall.
Young recorded a 15-point, 10-assist double-double in his collegiate opener against Omaha. One game later, he went off for 22 points and 13 assists, tying the freshman single-game assist record.
He has provided strong scoring and playmaking since Oklahoma’s first contest this season.
Here are the top records the freshman has broken or tied in his 29-game career:
NCAA single-game assist record
Young tied the NCAA’s single-game assist record with 22 against Northwestern State Dec. 19. He became the fourth player in history to record the stat since assists became an official stat during the 1983-84 season. On his way to tying the Division I record, Young broke the Big 12 and Oklahoma single-game assist record which were previously 18.
Oklahoma record for consecutive 20-point games
Young broke the program record for number of consecutive 20-point games, surpassing Sooner greats Wayman Tisdale and Stacey King, on Jan. 3 against Oklahoma State. The freshman hit 12 straight games, and it only took him 13 contests to do it. Young had a 20-point performance in 18 consecutive games, before snapping his streak with 17 points at Alabama. The freshman returned to his high-scoring ways against Baylor when Young went off for 44 points.
Fastest Sooner to 500 career points
It only took Young 17 games to score 500 points, the fastest in program history. It took Tisdale 19. He also became the first Division I player to hit 500 in his first 17 games for the first time in two decades. This was possible behind a nation-leading 30.5 points per game average and three 40-point outings against Oregon, TCU and Oklahoma State. Young is one of four Oklahoma players with multiple 40-point games.
Third Oklahoma freshman to score 600 points
Young became just the third freshman, second true freshman, in program history to score 600 points in his rookie campaign. He joins the ranks of former Sooners Wayman Tisdale's 810 and Jeff Webster's 640 points.
Oklahoma freshman season assist record
Young broke the program record for number of assists made by a freshman against TCU Jan. 13. He logged his 155th assist on a pass to freshman forward Brady Manek, breaking Tommy Mason-Griffin’s previous record of 154 assists in 2010. Young continues to add to his total, posting 174 thus far.
Oklahoma freshman season 3-point field goal record
On his first successful 3-pointer at Oklahoma State Jan. 20, Young broke the freshman record for made 3-point field goals with 71. Once again, he supplanted Mason-Griffin, who hit 70 shots in 2010, at No. 1. Eighteen games into the season, Young has made 78 3s with over one month of regular season competition to go.
Oklahoma freshman season made free throw record
In the Sooners' matchup against Kansas Jan. 23, Young found himself at the line for 12 shots. He made 10, and in the process, broke the program record for the number of made free throws by a freshman. The previous record was 146 in 2014 by Jordan Woodard. Young, as of Tuesday night's matchup versus Baylor, has made 222.
Big 12 Player of the Week record
The freshman tied the conference record for number of Big 12 Player of the Week honors awarded to a single player in one season Jan. 15. Young is now tied with former Sooner Blake Griffin who received six nods during the 2008-09 season.
Big 12 record for most 40-point games in a single season
With Young's 44-point show at home in Oklahoma's win over Baylor, he broke another conference record. Young has scored 40 points in four contests this season, the most in Big 12 history. His 28.0 points per game average is on-pace to set a new conference record for average points, potentially shattering Michael Beasley's 26.2 points per game record set in 2008 at Kansas State.
Big 12 record for most points in the regular season
With 18 points in the Sooners' loss to Baylor, Young became the only player in conference history to reach 800 points in the regular season. He passed Beasley who set the previous regular-season scoring record with 795 points in 2008.
Oklahoma freshman scoring record
Young also broke Tisdale's freshman scoring record in the game against Baylor. Tisdale scored a program-high 810 points his rookie season in 1983. Young's 18 points put him atop Tisdale with 811 in his freshman year. Webster, now in the third spot, follows more than 150 points behind with 640 scored in his first year at Oklahoma.
