Student Government Association presidential candidate Yaseen Shurbaji speaks at the SGA debate in Meacham Auditorium Oct. 23, 2017. Shurbaji recently released a statement regarding the recent resignation of VP for University Community Jabar Shumate and the allegations that Sigma Alpha Epsilon would be returning to campus.

The president of the Student Government Association has released a statement saying he has spoken with President James Gallogly about the departure of Jabar Shumate, Sigma Alpha Epsilon and the search for Shumate's replacement.

Yaseen Shurbaji, SGA president, said in his statement that according to a university audit, Shumate misused university assets, and the complete details of the findings will be made public in the near future. He also said, as earlier confirmed by The Daily, that Sigma Alpha Epsilon will not be returning to OU's campus.

"If the SAE chapter were to ever return, there would first have to be an open consensus among the entire OU community, and those affected by the incident would be deeply involved in the decision," Shurbaji said in the statement. "President Gallogly mentioned that people on all sides of this issue have said there will be some point in the future when this needs to be discussed and healing can begin. He quoted a line from one person — 'forgive but not forget.' The blatant racism and hatred of 2015 was simply wrong and has no place on our campus, and it is important for us to proceed with caution when making any considerations."

Shurbaji said Gallogly emphasized the importance of the role of vice president for University Community and agreed to have SGA actively involved in choosing Shumate's successor. SGA will also help review and re-craft the job description to "maximize the role," Shurbaji said in the statement.

Shurbaji added SGA will be meeting with President Gallogly upon their return to Norman to discuss how to better serve the student body.

Shurbaji's full statement can be read below.
