The OU Student Veterans Association hosted its grand opening Aug. 24 for the Student Veterans Association Room located in the basement of the former Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity house.

The new lounge has a TV area with couches and chairs. It also includes a study lounge with private study cubicles and decor representing the five branches of the military said president of the association Justin Cook. The room will be open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at 730 College Ave.

Cook said spouses and children of student veterans are also welcome in the facility.

"In the military, you're always moving, and so having that camaraderie, having that shoulder to lean on is definitely a huge benefit for both the military member and the spouse at the same time," Cook said.

The Oklahoma Kappa chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon was shut down in March 2015 after a video showing some of its members reciting a racist chant on a date party bus appeared online.

The SAE house has been converted into the University Community Center. The facility now houses the Student Veterans Association, the Disability Resource Center and the Henderson Scholars Program.
