OU graduate students will raise money to buy books for an Oklahoma City elementary school by hosting their own book sale.
OU Graduate Student Life, in partnership with OU College of Arts and Sciences, will host its annual Scholastic Book Fair Nov. 6 to 9. The book fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day in Ellison Hall room 132, according to Graduate Student Life’s Facebook page.
A new public school is chosen as the sale’s beneficiary each year, said Claire Parker, a second-year graduate student and Graduate Student Life assistant. This year’s chosen school is Bodine Elementary School, Parker said.
Parker said each year, the book fair has a fundraising goal of around $2,500 and offers Scholastic products ranging in difficulty and genre.
The money will go toward buying academic books for the classrooms, including nonfiction novels for upper-level classes and picture books or easy readers for the younger students, Parker said.
Many of the graduate students have children of their own, and Graduate Student Life works to incorporate the students' kids into as many of the programming opportunities as possible, Parker said.
“(The book fair is often held) to benefit the students and staff here — when I was an undergrad, I would often buy books to use for my student teaching,” she said. “It’s also an easy way to give back to the community that surrounds us.”
