An international student previously in danger of deportation has now been allowed to enroll in her last semester of classes, according to the GoFundMe page set up to support her.
The student is one of 12 other international students with an outstanding Bursar balance, preventing them enrolling and facing the possibility of losing their student visa status. Lauren Brookey, vice president of Marketing and Communications, previously said there were 18 international students total with an outstanding balance, but a statement from OU has now said there are 12.
Last Friday the student produced a "commitment of resources" and was able to enroll for her last semester, according to the statement.
The student will still have to pay the rest of her Bursar debt by March but is now enable to finish her last semester, according to the GoFundMe page. She is the only one who has been granted the privilege “that we know so far,” Danielle Larios, creator of the page, said in the post.
The statement from OU said the student was the only one of the 12 that expressed interest in enrolling for the semester and also faced difficulty in finding the funds.
Larios started the GoFundMe on Thursday, Feb. 7. Since then, the page has received $5,513 of the $20,000 goal.
“I am excited to announce that the threat of deportation is finally gone for our student we were sponsoring,” Larios said in the post.
