Following the disbandment of OU’s chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity after a video of them reciting racist chants surfaced Sunday, the future of employees of the house remains unclear.
To help one of these employees, Howard Dixon, a former student has set up a fundraising account on indiegogo.com.
The account, which was created by Blake Burkhart, had already raised over $10,000 by 1:50 p.m. Monday and has over 150 donors since its creation Sunday. The page aims to raise $50,000.
"The crowdfunding site is an attempt to make the best of a bad situation and give Howard some financial stability while he is forced to look for a job due to circumstances outside of his control," Burkhart said in a Facebook message.
One donor, Tarean Johnson, an employee at OU, found out about the fundraiser on social media, she said.
Johnson knows many former members of the fraternity who knew and loved Dixon, she said.
When she found out about Dixon not being able to work due to the actions of a few students, Johnson cried, she said.
OU is a family, and it needs to support people like the employee who need help, Johnson said.
