OU President Emeritus David Boren will not teach his usual government class in the spring 2019 semester for health reasons, according to an email sent to students enrolled in the class.
The email, sent by Shad Satterthwaite to students enrolled in Boren's honors political science course, said Satterthwaite will take over the teaching of the course.
The email does not expand on Boren's condition other than noting he will be taking a sabbatical in the spring for health reasons. Satterthwaite suggested that those who intended to take the course specifically from Boren could wait to take it in the future.
Boren spokesperson Matt Epting said the sabbatical is not tied to any specific problem, but will allow Boren to take time for rest.
"He isn't facing any serious health issues but is taking the semester to get some needed rest at home and reduce fatigue," Epting said by text.
Boren suffered from a minor stroke at a statue dedication ceremony last April and was hospitalized for multiple days. Boren also underwent heart bypass surgery in March 2017.
