Around 9 p.m. Wednesday night, a black Dodge Challenger parked in front of Baked Bear on Campus Corner caught fire.
Amanda Meyers, the girlfriend of the owner of the car, said she was “speechless” and does not know what may have caused the blaze.
Meyers said she and her boyfriend had stopped at Hurts Donuts and then sat outside to eat. Her boyfriend went back to open his car door and “smoke just started pouring out,” and the car caught fire, she said.
Aerospace engineering sophomore Jeffrey Kozlowski was in Fuzzy’s when he heard about what was happening and then went outside of the restaurant to see for himself.
“The black car was almost completely covered in flames, and it was spreading over to my friend’s car parked right next to it,” Kozlowski said. “I saw a few things exploding like airbags, things like that were going off, and they made really loud bangs. It kind of made me jump.”
Meyers said the car was fairly new. Many of those on Campus Corner during the car fire came outside of various businesses to watch.
“It was pretty quick and scary,” Meyers said. “I don’t know what it was... There were a lot of tears.”
Firefighters at the scene contained the fire quickly but said they could not answer questions on what happened.
