With 1:46 left in the fourth quarter, freshman forward Caya Smith made a layup that made history for Oklahoma.

Kids from various elementary and middle schools in Norman gathered to watch and cheer on the Sooners towards a victory. The loud and magnetic energy radiating off the 7,757 students, educators and fans filled the Lloyd Noble Center.

“We love field trip day,” head coach Jennie Baranczyk said. “We love to be able to have all these kids coming in, and what a fun environment.”

On Wednesday, No. 9 Oklahoma defeated Western Carolina 122-56. This score set a new OU women’s basketball record for most points scored in a single game.

OU surpassed the previous record of 121 which was reached twice, with the last times being in 2007 against Central Arkansas and in 1990 against Prairie View A&M.

The 122 points Oklahoma put up makes it the second most points scored in a game by a team in the SEC this year, trailing behind Auburn who scored 128 on Nov. 8.

The 66-point victory against the Catamounts is also the largest point margin under Baranczyk, who arrived in 2021.

“Obviously we shot the ball well today,” Baranczyk said after the game. “I’ve never been worried about whether we shoot well or don’t shoot well. It’s how we have our movement, and I thought our spacing was better today. I thought there were some really good moments.”

Against the Catamounts, the Sooners shot 63.2% making 48 out of 76 shots and shot 55.6% from three-point-range. Wednesday marked Oklahoma’s best shooting percentage since 2001 when they shot 65%, defeating Kansas.

“I had to remind myself to continue to shoot,” redshirt senior guard Lexy Keys said. “Those are shots that I’ve taken a million times.”

Five Sooners reached double digits offensively, and junior center Raegan Beers led the team with 27 points. Beers became the first Sooner to accomplish back-to-back 25 point games since Taylor Robertson in 2021.

After three straight home games to start the season, the Sooners will play their next four games on the road or at a neutral site.

Next, Oklahoma will play Wichita State at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at the Charles Koch Arena in Wichita, Kansas.
