Norman North (1-1) defeated Deer Creek (0-2) 27-14 on Friday in a Week 2 matchup.

After a season-opening loss to crosstown rival Norman High School last Friday, Norman North head coach Justin Jones kept a positive mindset heading into this week.

“The whole theme of this week was growth. We wanted to see ourselves grow in a lot of different areas,” Jones said.

“Offensively, we didn’t shoot ourselves in the foot. We didn’t have a lot of negative-yard plays, we got the ball out of our hands quickly and we turned small plays into big plays,” he said.

A key factor in the win, according to Jones, was the running game anchored by junior running back Byron Mason, who scored two touchdowns and was determined not to lose two games in a row.

“I just wanted to produce for my team,” Mason said. “Last week I didn’t do that as well, so I didn’t want to let down my brothers.”

Next week, the Timberwolves will host undefeated Moore (2-0), a team Moore edged in a nail-biter last season.

“I want a clean, good football game like it was tonight,” Jones said when asked what he’ll take into the game against Moore. “Moore presents a big challenge.

“They’re a good football team, they run the football well, so we have to make sure our defense is on point and that our offense can handle the pressure,” he said.

The Moore Lions will travel to Norman North Stadium to face the Timberwolves on Friday at 7 p.m.
