Rainfall is expected to occur in the Norman and Oklahoma City areas until 4 p.m. today. Heavy rain and flooding throughout May has closed 15 highways statewide, put 44 Oklahoma counties in a state of emergency and even killed one firefighter.
Here is what you can do to protect yourself during a flood:
Stay aware
Keep an eye on local news and be current on what is happening with the weather. Keep a television on or listen to a radio to stay up-to-date on breaking news with weather.
Move to higher ground
In the event of flash flooding, moving to higher ground will make it more difficult for flood waters to reach you. However, only do so if it is safe to move.
Do not drive or walk through flood water
Flood water is always deeper than it appears. It can sweep away a car, and six inches of moving flood water can knock a person over. If you must travel through flood water, only do so if the water is still.
