The OU India Student Association’s annual Desi Prom, a modern spin on traditional Desi culture, is Friday.

Vice President External Caitlin Varghese says ISA hopes to use this event to show those that might not feel connected to Indian or Desi culture that they’re welcome on campus.

“I did not really know a lot about my culture coming into campus … I was a little bit more interested in exploring my identity through my culture, and I was able to explore that through ISA,” Varghese said. “This community offers such a safe space to explore that without feeling judged.”

Desi Prom will include photo booths, decorations and a place to show off your culture care-free. The theme is “Disco Dil Se,” with Desi attire that complements black, gold and silver suggested, but Varghese emphasized the inclusivity of the formal.

“We’re, again, just trying to cultivate a community and a safe space where we can represent our culture and you feel free to represent your own culture without any judgment,” Varghese said.

The formal is 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. in the Oklahoma Memorial Union’s Molly Shi Ballroom. Students interested in attending can RSVP online.
