Former Oklahoma wrestler Sam Hazewinkel captured gold in the 2016 Pan American Championships on Saturday.

On Feb. 25, Team USA announced that Hazewinkel would replace Angel Escobedo on the men’s freestyle team at 125.5 pounds.

Hazewinkel defeated Canada’s Darthe Capellan in a 7-5 decision to win the gold medal on Saturday night. He scored technical falls over Eliesar Guevera Abrines of Cuba (14-3) and Andry Jose Davila Baron of Venezuela (10-0) on his way to the finals.

“He came out hard and he was a good fighter. I like a good fight match, those are fun and those are the kind you remember. Praise God that my shape was good and I could stay in there and fight,” Hazewinkel said in a press release.

Five of six Americans in the freestyle championship won gold medals. Three 2012 Olympic Team members, including Hazewinkel, were among the gold medalists.
