OU students were presented awards as representatives of OU for their dedication to pro-Israel foreign policy at the 2011 American Israel Public Affairs Committee Policy Conference in Washington D.C.
The title “Activist of the Year” was awarded to OU on May 23 in recognition of the efforts of student organizations such as Student Congress, OU College Republicans and Sooners for Israel, according to the conference’s website.
One of the pro-Israel campus activities put on by students that earned OU this award was Israel Week. Israel Week is a demonstration and celebration of Israeli culture, Hunter Ligon, president of OU College Republicans, said.
Sooners for Israel also invites guest speakers to the university, such as Israeli ambassador Michael Oren, whose visit to OU was canceled due to weather conditions, Ligon said.
The award is a great honor for OU, Ligon said.
“It shows that we all know how important Israel is to U.S. relations,” Ligon said. “We all came together for a common cause.”
The title “Activist of the Year” was awarded to two other colleges this year: the University of California-Los Angeles and Indiana University, according to a press release.
