So, this is what I got out of this response: Any increase in the price of education is automatically a scam, and the profits from this scam go to the education industry, or what you might call "the system"...someone apparently needs to take some econ classes. As it turns out, universities such as OU have budgetary requirements to stay open. Professors don't work pro bono, and building's neither heat nor illuminate themselves. So, if you don't like the university's cost, you can just THROW IT ON THE GROUND since you're not PART OF THIS SYSTEM!

Hat's off to you, Max. Well done. Also, ArchC's and jfreezy's responses are priceless. Thank you all for the laughs.

Thank you for the editor's note. You have indeed gained my satisfaction. I'm still not sure that this is necessarily newsworthy, but at least it's clear what this list represents. My list of the top 100 singles of the decade would be vastly different, but I also don't listen to much pop or or so-called "indie" music, and I suppose that most readers would be less interested in a list of my top 100 extreme metal singles than they would in this article.

from patt5982:

"Plus, how many majors will get you into a specific field. Most English majors don't graduate and start writing novels. Most math majors don't go to be mathmeticians. Most science majors do not go on to be chemists or botanists. Most history majors do not go on to be historians. The list goes on with psychology, communications, and many other majors."

I think that you are forgetting to factor in that many people who declare majors like mathematics, chemistry, and botany as freshmen don't actually end up getting degrees in those things. I know from my experience in the Physics and Engineering Departments that the weed out rate is about 50% after 3 years (for Physics, at least. Engineering's rate might be a bit lower). I'm pretty sure that of the people who finish these degrees, such as myself, only a small minority enter into fields that do not require having an engineering or hard science degree. Call it arrogance, but I know how much work I put into getting my degree, and I would not have made it through if I thought I was going to be doing something not related to what I was studying.

I agree that a balanced education is important, and toward that end I enrolled in a wide variety of non-science courses to fulfill my Gen-Ed and related requirements, but I don't think that you will ever convince me that "out of the several majors at this university, Classics and Letters majors show the most determination."

Top 50 Singles according to what? Are these just the columnist's favorites? If so, then why is there no exposition before jumping into the list? Why is this newsworthy? It's almost as if the columnist made a playlist of songs from 2009 from his personal library, started a shuffle and wrote down the songs in the order they came in while filling in descriptions with the help of a thesaurus.

As I've mentioned in comments on other columns, it seems as if there's a lack of editor input on some of these online posts. Even having a simple introductory paragraph saying where this came from would have made this column at least slightly journalistic in nature.

I don't think that hacking off a week of lectures is very fair to the professors involved. If you want an extra week to study for finals, you should be petitioning to have school start a week earlier. Good luck getting student support for that one.

Those things are meant to help blind people, who are a presence at OU and in the surrounding community. I find it surprising that this blog post made it onto this site without someone pointing this out somewhere down the line. If there isn't an an editorial staff for these "blogs," there should be because they are being linked from the front page where everyone (including possible sponsors and future students) can see them.

Intelligent Design (Creationism) is not a scientific theory. It is a proposition that does not attempt to modify itself to include new evidence as it is presented, unlike scientific theories such as evolution and gravity, which have been modified repeatedly in light of new findings.
Intelligent Design also makes no predictions about phenomena that should be researched in the future, which would explain why the Sam Noble Museum of Natural History's staff scientists would oppose its presentation as science, as their research has been successful only because they have placed their confidence in the evolutionary theory, which has successfully explained their findings and led them in search of new discoveries.

Again, mustafa's a troll. Just ignore him. Reasoned arguments will have no effect on him. He likely knows his facts, and he is very good at what he does (trolling, that is), but if you think that he actually believes the assertions he is making, or if he does that rehashing the facts will convince him of anything, then you're fooling yourself.

The only good that arguing with him will accomplish is presenting the facts to other readers who haven't done their own research, but his claims are so ridiculous that I don't think he'll be convincing many people.
