H.R. 3261, the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) by Rep Lamar Smith,[R-TX]is censorship, plain and simple, and the wrong approach to protecting any business.
The proposed legislation would dramatically affect small online businesses and groups who lack the capacity to engage in expensive legal battles. Wrongly accused websites would suffer immediate losses, since PayPal and the advertisers would be required to comply with a demand to either block or cease doing business. Undoubtedly, they would opt to cease doing business and pull their ads and services, since blocking would be an onerous task.
Furthermore, Americans would be blocked from accessing websites or services that have been censored - just like in China.
I am amazed to see that Conyers is one of the 24 co-sponsors! What is he thinking!??

Nice article. It was great to see the number of organizations which participated in this event. Dr. Laurel Smith, a cultural geographer with the University's Geography Department was the mastermind and originator of this kick-off event for the National Geography Awareness Week. Meteorologist Randy Peppler of the Cooperative Institute for Mesoscale Meteorological Studies also participated and was joined by Norman Fair Trade, OUr Earth, Voices of Oklahoma Community Radio, OU's Crimson and Green, Native Roots Market, Norman Sustainability Network, and others. It was especially interesting to understand how the issue of Fair Trade is an important aspect of the study of cultural geography.
This issue should also fit nicely with OU's Women and Gender Studies and their new Center for Social Justice which launches at 5 pm on Thursday at the Baird Lounge.

Yikes! 'Forecasting' is spelled correctly throughout the body of the article, but not in the headline! Ouch!
Paul Risser's concept of bringing together computer scientists and natural scientists and using this process to measure other processes has dynamic potential. Measurements "such as the amount of carbon dioxide taken up by plants, how much nitrogen washes off the soil, how fast disease effecters are moved across the landscape, or what the effect of drought would be on the distribution of different plant or animal species" will greatly benefit not only business, policy makers and other scientists, it will generate a healthier understanding among the general citizenry - many of whom are confused by ad campaigns designed to throw doubt on the science of climate change and the IPCC report.
Thanks for a fine article,

Hmmm... "anonymous" has started casting stones.
Occupy Norman, a peaceful group determined "to protest corporate corruption and wealth inequality," has met with the mayor, police chief, chief of fire department and head of city parks. The "little detail" mentioned by 'anonymous' (hiding the name make one think the writers may be part of the "afraid of dissent" paranoid types) was discussed and waived in favor of the a higher concept.
The Daily put it very well:
____"America’s history is being written right now. Will the United States go down as the greatest democracy in the world and a firm protector of human rights, or will it be just another nation so afraid of dissent that it must attack its own people?"
Obviously, this city's officials are NOT afraid of peaceful dissent. Thank goodness calmer heads are running the City of Norman.
