My favorite part of this article is when you didn't talk to a single person who claims to have no religion.
Seriously, an article about the decline in self-identifying "Christians" and not a single quote or paraphrase from an atheist or agnostic?
If this were JMC 2033, you just got a 50 for failing to get input from the proper stakeholders in this story.
More great journalism from the OU Daily. (Not that it's actually expected.)

I think it's stupid because that hat is ridiculous.

ARCHitect,
This is the very initiative that Student Congress' Green Week is undertaking.
There are going to be events and tables set up all week in the union and on the south oval, not to mention the FREE concert featuring Nelo on Walker-Adams Mall on Thursday.
They will be selling shirts and taking donations for recycling bins on campus. All the money goes right to the cause. Student Congress doesn't see a dime of it.
I encourage you and everyone else to stop by and help support this great cause this week. It's $7 for a shirt, and it makes our campus more sustainable.
Look forward to seeing everyone come out to support Green Week '09!

Sadly, yes, it is that hard. When the daily wants to run articles about some of the tripe that they run articles about, it's hard to get them to care. They'd rather run hit pieces about the lack of communication that is caused by their own lack of news gathering ability. I've written press releases and spoken to reporters about getting them to cover Student Congress issues, but they just don't seem interested.
They'd rather write about the non-sex in the stacks that maybe is happening or maybe not but maybe enough to write a huge waste of an article. It's frustrating.
It's Green Week, and I wish they'd ask about the awesome events going on around campus to promote sustainable living on campus. (/Shameless plug.)
I won't say that there aren't issues with the communication between Congress and the students, there are. We don't do enough talking. But if no one wants to listen, it's hard to find a wider audience.
I hope that, in the future, things turn around. People SHOULD be interested, since it is their money and their lives we are talking about.
Get involved. Email congress@ou.edu with your concerns. Come by the Conoco Wing in the OMU and talk with the people there. They really do care, and they want to hear what you have to say.
Thanks for listening,

Kayle,
My favorite line from your article was this one, "UOSA must, if it actually cares about students, ascertain student interest by extending the filing deadline for UOSA presidential candidates." It really crystallizes a thought in my mind.
In that vein, I offer my counterpoint. I hope you don't mind, I stole your sentence structure.
Students must, if they care about their experience at OU, give a rat's ass about what is going on.
It's a well known fact that OU's campus is largely made up of, as you put it, "lazy, unmotivated shmucks." At every turn, from fee clarity to dead week to parking and on and on, UOSA, Student Congress, et al have done nothing but try and talk with students. Petitions, chalkings, forums, everything short of class action lawsuits, have been drummed up in the past in order to motivate the student body. To no avail.
I wouldn't call the people lazy, and not just because they elected me. They are apathetic. They think OU is a degree factory. It's relatively cheap, the problems seem petty, and, ultimately, they aren't really in it to better the experience. They want a degree, the rest is moot.
You and I and many of the leaders in UOSA are different. We want to better the situation for everyone. But, if people don't want to commit themselves to do it, I don't want them masquerading as "leaders" either.
It's a tired argument, and no one is more distressed by the lack of involvement on this campus than I am. That being said, we are wasting our time trying to force student activism down people's throats, which is what extending the deadline really means.
I respect that you want people to care. I also respect your willingness to advocate an argument that you know is flawed in order to try and find an answer to a bad situation. But, it just isn't going to happen.
Maybe, one day, the student body will care enough to run for UOSA President and Student Congress and CAC chair in record numbers. Until then, let's just be happy that capable, motivated people are advocating for the apathetic masses.

Did the Daily start paying opinion columnists on a per comment basis last week?
It's the only explanation I can come up with for all these articles that seem to be fishing for comments.
