You can't be "objectively realistic" about yourself and still be happy. To be a total realist about the world and remain happy, it's easy-be apathetic.
There is way too much negativity around us but the answer isn't, like eightbit said, blind nationalism.

you raise a number of excellent points. rather than grazing the surface on each though, you should pick one to really make people think about it.
