@Lauren111-I dont see how you can say you are proud that students arent voting to show UOSA cant do anything. I may not be the biggest fan of it, but they are one step closer than you are in talking with campus and city officials and actually accomplishing something.

Plus, if you dont vote, you dont have a right to complain when its appropriate to complain. You didnt have a voice when it was necessary, so, remember in the future when you want to complain, remember that you dont have a right too because you didnt take a couple minutes to go and vote and be somewhat involved. In fact, it doesnt even make sense that you even comment on this article since you didnt vote.

Lastly, you say that not voting is a silent protest of half the student body. First, half the student body just doesnt care. Its no protest. If you have that much faith in half of the people who didnt vote, reconsider that number to a very low percentage. Second, by not voting, the people who do vote have an easier time getting their candidate in, thus defeating your purpose of "silent protest."

None of your points even present a valid arguement. If used in moderation, there is nothing wrong with alcohol. In fact, it has been proven many times that red whine actually helps the heart out, again in moderation. If you apply it, liver poisioning and making bad decisions wouldn't happen beause, again moderation is the key. In the legal aspect, drunk driving and binge drinking are against the law due to DUI and Public Intoxication laws already set in place. Again, if abused, it's not being used as intended.

In comparison, alcohol doesnt even come close to smoking. Unlike alcohol, smoking has no purpose and only has negative consequences everytime someone lights up. Whether it is litter, second and thirdhand smoke, etc., cigarettes serve no purpose except to harm.

On a side note, if you haven't seen a tobacco ad in 30 years, then you must be blind because everytime I walk into a gas station, I see tobacco marketing ads everywhere. I've even see a Joe Camel ad recently, which is against the law.

Yes we all know that people have a right a right to smoke. But the people on campus who dont also have a right to not have to tolerate it and do something about it. And however you look at it, smoking isnt the norm anymore and its affecting everyone else due to secondhand smoke, litter, etc.

Obesity isn't an epidemic in the sense that it is a disease. You can't spread obesity like the flu, to someone. That's again in moderation. If you over eat, then you gain weight. Same with alcohol. Its even been proven that alcohol can actually be benefit your health. It decreses cardiovascular disease, fibrinogen, etc. Overdrinking can harm you, but one or two drinks a night can be good for you. Either way, both are fine when used in moderation unlike smoking where you already start the steep decline to cancer and death.
