@soonerboomers:

"People also say liberal here meaning some sort of vague right-center ideology. So you can't really trust the labels."

Just to clarify, the term liberal used to refer to conservative ideals. Only more recently has the term taken on a "left-leaning" connotation. You're right, you absolutely cannot take labels at face value, especially in the current political environment where doublespeak and hidden meanings occupy an astonishing amount of the political landscape. However, you can't simply dismiss labels, terms, ideas, etc. and comment on them without first researching and understanding them. Otherwise, you're only adding to the confusion.

Josh,

I love your music articles, but I'm afraid there are a couple problems with this piece. For one, the past great shows you cite (Shins, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, etc) were a while ago. Those bands came through when no one really knew who they were. The Shins played the Opolis, and the Yeah Yeah Yeah played the Green Door (RIP), two very small venues. Bands like that still come through here, you just aren't aware of their relevance or they haven't broken through to a national level yet. Vampire Weekend played the Opolis last year, and now they are HUGE. Camera Obscura is coming to that venue soon, and Quasi just played there! The shows you seek are all around you. Personally, I like seeing bands before they blow up anyway. Secondly, while I truly admire your gusto, Wayne Coyne has little interest in revitalizing the local music scene. In fact, having interviewed him several times, I know he doesn't even believe in "scenes." I have serious doubts that he would ever open a venue when he has a movie to work on, festivals to play, and international tours to go on. Not to mention the fact that he has countless locals such as yourself hounding him for some kind of output or support. I wish someone would buy the old Hollywood Theater on McGee back from the Norman Public Library and reopen it as a venue. The Chainsaw Kittens used to play there back in the day, and it is a perfect size venue. Ahhhh, but I guess I'm daydreaming, too.

This bill is proposed as a "way to save money for the state," by eliminating bilingual signs and information at state departments such as the Department of Human Services. Basically Rep. Randy Terrill is telling people that we will save all this money if we don't print fliers in Spanish and don't hire interpreters. Unfortunately Mr. Terrill's borderline racist attempt to "save us money" would only make the DHS workers jobs harder, and in the end more costly. They are required, by law, to provide assistance to anyone they can, regardless of their first language. I spoke with a DHS worker who told me that they will absolutely still provide services for people who don't speak English, and Sen. Andrew Rice has explained time and time again that the cost of printing those fliers and paying interpreters has already been inquired for the next several years. In fact making English our "official language" will drop us from federal funding programs and in the end lose money for the state.

Westboro is a very small congregation, and if people would simply ignore them they would no longer be relevant. There is no point in getting all pissed off over a dozen close minded people that are good at getting attention and pressing your buttons. I will admit their behavior angers me, but it doesn't have to affect me.

After last semester I have to say it is nice to read reviews in the Daily that are both relevant and well articulated. Kudos Joshua!

Adam, this is awful my friend. The idea of Norman Music Festival is to have this great, FREE, event for music fans in our demographic. The idea of selling tickets is silly. Not only that but putting it in a field? Really man? The setting for the festival is one of the greatest things about it. I would much rather have several smaller, indoor stages that are located at local businesses than a few big ones outdoors. This gives the festival a really great local and, I hate to say it, "indie" feel, much like SXSW. The thought of puttting it at a park is just atrocious to me. Not only is it aesthetically appealing to have it downtown, it gives local businesses a huge boost.

I'm really glad to see a well thought out and visually impressive cartoon in the Daily! There is a god! Maybe!

I see where you're coming from, and I certainly don't want to say anything that might offend someone who works hard at the IT department. All I'm saying is that I understand her frustration. I'm in no way trying to defend the reputability of her facts. The site is constantly down, contacting can be difficult, etc. Plus I'm not too thrilled about the interface itself. But I don't blame the students. I just feel like we are at a major university, paying a lot in fees, and the site should reflect that.
