Roddack we do not need to imagine what a place without "government involvement" would be like. We can acatually go there and experience it for ourselves. Book a flight to Somalia. Come back and tell me how you liked that paradise of liberty. I'm joking of course. You wouldn't be back because someone would kill you for your i-pod and passport in the first 48 hours.

Sarah and Max:
I'll refer you to the work of Thomas Hobbes who worked out a long time ago that without a strong central power to protect society, people found themselves constantly at war with one another and constantly in danger.
Evidence that this still holds true today can be found in Steven Pinker's research on homicide rates among hunter gatherer tribes in New Guinea. Basically, there is no strong government influencing these tribes. They live in an anarchist's paradise, free to do as they choose. And they've got a much higher chance of getting murdered than anyone in the western world.
Oh but you're saying perhaps that's because they don't have access to nice modern firearms. Without the deterrent of a gun of course someone can bash your skull in with a rock. In that case I'd urge you to look at modern failed states where there are guns-a-plenty and again you have a much slimmer chance of dying of natural causes. Well, lead comes from nature so maybe I'm not being fair there.

You've got a really disappointing viewpoint there editorial staff.
Funding research is the kind of long term strategic vision that will ensure our state and our nation's future economic success. Here in Oklahoma we have to start thinking beyond plows and drill bits. Governor Henry is displaying the kind of leadership that we need more of.

Well that is hilarious. What really gets me chuckling though is that the Democrats control the White House and have majorities in both houses of congress which means that you can suck it.
How's that permanent Republican majority working out for you guys?

Rick Warren is first and formost about Rick Warren. Like most of the charismatic mega pastors he's a charlatan. A flim flam artist who'll say or do anything in order to promote himself. How else to explain his traveling to Syria, posing with Bashar al Assad and saying "Syria is a moderate country and the official government position is to not allow extremism of any kind."
Really Rick? I think there may be a few family members of Lebanese journalists who would disagree with you about the lack of extremity in Syria's policies.
It was an embarassment to have someone like Warren speaking on such a historic day.

John Kennedy Toole didn't get his novel published 'til after he died and it was awesome. Had he not killed himself he could have had a chance to gloat to the guys he knew back in the army that he had won a pulitzer prize.

If everyone who's served in the military is such a crackerjack expert at gun safety how come marines are given a rubber M-16 to hold while guarding embassies? How come they can't all carry concealed on their own bases here in the US? In 2006 11.6 percent of army recruits had criminal histories and had to obtain a waiver to be admitted. Of those 11% were for felonies. (New York Times 2/14/'07) There are people IN the army who won't be given live ammunition until the insurgents are coming over the wire. As such, I don't like the idea of them getting a pass on rules that the rest of us have to follow.

Branson:
Don't be down. I'm from Grant County myself. North Central Oklahoma is a great place to be from and I think Oklahoma will come around eventually it'll just take a while. Give it a little time. In the mean time don't feel bad about heading up to Denver and helping to solidify the bluing of Colorado. Conversely you could go back home and explain to your friends and family why the radical right is really wrong for small town Oklahoma. Be part of that 50 state strategy.
Either way, there's no need to cry. The future is bright.

One of the dumber opinions I've read in the Daily and that's saying something. Really disappointing to see such a short sighted view on the benefits of research coming from an OU science student.
Deen: since you're a microbiologist, look up a guy called Thomas Brock. An example of a man who was doing research which at first had no obvious "use" but which eventually lead to a discovery that made possible a technique used at just about every university and biological research lab in the world.
You never know where lightning will strike. We need more research, not less.
PS, if all we got out of the space race was communication satelite technology it was totally worth it and has paid for itself already.

Well Mustafa there's not a shred of proof to any supernatural belief system so if it makes you feel better I do consider this belief system absurd. But if it makes you feel worse, and judging by your obvious persecution complex I'm sure it will, I feel the same way about your religion. I'm sorry, I mean your "religion."
