"Even if you haven’t heard of Robert Gates until reading this column, you will be able to find something he has done during his illustrious career to align yourself with."

Is that a challenge?

I tend to agree, though I would like to point out that WGSSA did not do the protests this week, as they were told by higher-ups that they could not, as an organization, protest JFA. So this week's protests were brought to you by individual students.

And the condoms, I believe, are brought by the WOC, so they aren't bought by WGSSA. Maybe the students should have brought more, of course.

Please check the facts. This Washington Post article by a psychology professor, who chaired a task force on the study of mental health and abortion, clearly states all the lies associated with coming to the conclusion that women are more likely to be depressed after abortion.

You are not taking into account the fact that women who are more likely to get abortions have less stable lives in which to raise a child, and so would be more likely to get postpartum depression if they did carry it to term (therefore, they would be depressed no matter what). You are also falling prey to the stories of regret you hear; the vast majority of women who have abortions say they would do the same thing if they faced the choice again.

So please, stop spreading the lie that abortion is always associated with trauma. For some women, it is, I am not denying that. For many others, it is not. And for some women, having the child is just as traumatic as getting an abortion - yet people don't seem to be drawing the conclusion that having a child leads to depression (despite conditions like postpartum depression). Why? Because they are a minority of cases - and so are women who have depression after abortion.

Unbias,

First, Mary Fallin is not a mother of eight. Check the facts. Also, does her failed marriage make her a better candidate?

If she was running against Drew Edmundson and cited being a woman as to why she is more qualified, people would jump on her for sexism; males and females can do the same things politically, thanks. Same with mothers; just having children doesn't make you more qualified. Having more experience makes you more qualified.

Jari won't "handle" Washington because, um, as governor of Oklahoma she doesn't actually have jurisdiction over Washington. She has jurisdiction over Oklahoma. That's the problem with Fallin; she doesn't seem to recognize that she only has power HERE if she's elected HERE. She doesn't get to sign laws for Texas or for the nation; she signs them for Oklahoma.

The word is "biased," by the way. Bias is a noun, biased is the adjective. Learn basic English grammar please.

Oklahoma is a right-wing state - but guess what? Jari Askins is right-wing. The last time I checked, the Oklahoma Democrats are much more conservative than the national Democratic Party. Why? Because they recognize that Oklahoma is a right-wing state. There is a difference in right-wing conservatism and right-wing authoritarianism, however - Jari is conservative, Mary is authoritarian (extreme right-wing). Being one of the most conservative states in the nation doesn't mean that we are representative of extreme right-wing authoritarianism. In fact, there are plenty of moderate conservatives, regular moderates, and (God forbid!) liberals here too. And guess what, we get a vote too (scary, isn't it?).

Oklahoma politicians are the HIGHEST paid in the region, and yet our education is the LOWEST. Arkansas legislators make less than half of what Oklahoma's do, their people make less per capita than Oklahoma's - and yet they invest more in education than we do. But we can't afford 744?

YES WE CAN. It would require going over the budget, yes, but we should be doing that anyway. If Arkansas can afford to spend much more per child than Oklahoma, while they make less per capita, then we can afford some cuts in certain areas. Also, this is a comparison to just one state in the region - look at Texas, Kansas, and New Mexico, all of whom pay their legislators even less than Arkansas does - and all of whom spend much more per child in education.

The bill cannot lay out specifics as to how it will be paid; we do not know what future problems may come, and saying "it will be paid through this means" would cause more problems. It's actually better for the bill to allow the budgetary committees to come up with a means to pay for education than to decide for them.

As far as other state agencies being cut, the question you need to ask is this: where are your priorities? If education is at the top of the list, then it should be funded FIRST. How about cuts to the amount of money we spend incarcerating those on non-violent drug charges? Oklahoma has some of the highest incarceration rates in the country, yet does not have the highest crime rates - this does not make sense.

If you argue that other agencies cannot afford to be cut to make way for education, fine. But do not say that education is among your highest priorities - that would be a lie. If you do not believe that the Oklahoma government could afford cuts to other places in favor of education, fine - but do not tell me that you believe in the importance of education, because that is a lie. Your words need to match with your actions, and if you truly believe that education is one of the most important things we can do for our children, then vote YES on 744. If you vote no, then you lose your right to claim that you believe education is important.

Fabphen88, the numbers for the living wage calculation were based on an average-sized family of 2 adults, 2 children, therefore that is what jahrabizad should have used in his calculations if he was attempting to state that SDS's calculation (really, Penn State's calculation) was wrong.

That being said, I like this initiative, but I would love to see more information about where the money is coming from. Not that I don't support it, but emotional appeals and concrete ideas are two different things.

Huh, look at that. A conservative directly threatening someone's life. And yet the liberals are supposed to be the ones killing people?

On a side note, I'm surprised that comment made it past the online editors. That is a threat on someone's life, and yet people thought it was appropriate to post?
