Book Review: ‘The Angel’s Game’

“The Angel’s Game,” released in mid-June, takes the concept of purple prose to a higher level, making the book tiresome instead of atmospheric, which is what author Carlos Ruiz Zafón seems to be striving for. The premise of “The Angel’s Game” is, admittedly, an interesting one. If the book was perhaps severely cut down and trimmed up, it could have been saved. READ MORE

Exhibit shows off Firehouse faculty’s skills

For dumpster divers, one man’s trash is another man’s dinner. Studio art junior Mick Tresemer said he goes dumpster diving for food about twice a week. “I feel better because I’m not spending money, and I’m not hurting the earth,” Tresemer said. READ MORE

Norman shelter gives homeless a place to recover

There are more than 600 homeless people living on the streets of Cleveland County, and more than 800 people who are precariously housed. East Main Place works to help the homeless in the area by providing transitional housing and life skills. The temporary housing consists of 21 apartments, and the program also provides weekly case management that teaches residents important life skills. READ MORE

Guest director Chris Boyd and the University of Oklahoma Summer Stage will present “The Bremen Town Musicians,” opening Wednesday, and Boyd said the musical now has a new timeliness. Music-minded instructor teaches Beatles, ‘Star Wars’

With his long hair and freckles, Ryan Slesinger has become a familiar figure outside of Gittinger Hall. The 26-year-old OU instructor taught “Six Years in the Life: The Beatles and Counterculture,” a May intersession class. Slesinger will also be teaching “Star Wars and the Hero’s Journey” during August intercession. Slesinger said he believes that students should be kept engaged because they learn more that way. Poetry reading opens up a world of imagination

The Norman Train Depot was bright and cheerful Sunday, providing a strange contrast to what went on inside. You could hear birds chirping and see bicyclists whiz by outside, but when Elizabeth Sargent began reading her poetry, all of these signs of life faded away and made room in the imagination for the images that her poetry called forth.
