Oklahoma pitcher Nathan Wiles was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the eighth round — 248th pick — of the 2019 MLB Draft on Tuesday.
The 6-foot-4, 228-pound right-hander just finished up his junior season with an 8-4 record and 4.40 ERA. His second-to-last outing of the 2019 campaign was likely his most dominant, as he tossed a season-high eight innings in which he surrendered two runs against rival Texas.
Wiles was the lone upperclassman in Oklahoma’s four-man starting rotation in 2019. For Wiles, if he has solid command of his fastball, changeup, curveball and slider — or at least three of the four — he can settle in nicely and retire talented bats. His size is also a major plus.
