Oklahoma right-hander Jason Ruffcorn was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the 18th round (534th pick) of the 2019 MLB Draft.
Ruffcorn is the third Sooner taken in this year’s draft, going after No. 2 overall pick Sooner signee Bobby Witt Jr. and eighth-rounder Nathan Wiles.
A junior campaign that saw the right-handed closer lead the Big 12 with 11 saves and post a 2.43 ERA almost never was, as Ruffcorn was not declared eligible by the NCAA until Feb. 15, the morning of Oklahoma’s season opener against Cal Poly.
Just as he did last summer, Ruffcorn will have a decision to make in the coming days. He could return to the Sooners as the go-to closer under ‘pitching guru’ Skip Johnson or sign a contract to potentially play ball with the Reds.
