Housing and Food has ordered new tornado safety placards to be placed in Couch Center because many of the 500 residents had little idea what to do during the June 12 tornado that hit Norman, said Jennifer Brewer, a camp counselor for the Oklahoma Institute for Diversity in Journalism and a recent OU public relations graduate.
Jeff Peters’ introduction to political work would have sent many looking for a different kind of high-school job. “I went door-to-door in a pretty rough neighborhood in Oklahoma City,” Peters said of his involvement in Kirk Humphries’ 2004 United States Senate campaign. Several employees in the OU Office of Admissions expressed concern about their health after being notified of possible mold contamination in the workplace. Buchanan Hall, which is undergoing renovations this month, houses many student services offices, including admissions, financial aid and the bursar.
The University of Oklahoma Press laid off eight workers Wednesday, the same day OU President David Boren announced the university did not forsee OU needing to layoff employees. “I don’t want [ the media] saying we expect anything like that,” Boren said Wednesday after the meeting of the OU Board of Regents in Ardmore, referring to potential layoffs or furloughs. “That would have to be like the end of the world, virtually.”

Athletics subsidizes academics at OU, Boren says
OU head football coach Bob Stoops will make $4.675 million in 2010 as part of a reworked contract approved Wednesday by the OU Board of Regents. Stoops’ new contract, which will pay him $2.925 million in guaranteed compensation for 2009-10, includes a $700,000 per-year bonus for remaining at OU, and a $200,000 per-year increase in salary.
An online dating service managed to send a mass e-mail to OU students and faculty Tuesday disguised as a letter from a single Russian woman named “Svetlana.” The e-mail, which appears to be a in the form of a letter from a 27-year-old woman describing a life of hardship who is desperately seeking true love, came into OU Exchange accounts Tuesday morning.
Norman City Council members unanimously approved a city ordinance Tuesday banning smoking and tobacco use in city parks. Councilman Doug Cubberley, who suffers from asthma, has advocated for the tobacco ban in parks for more than two years.
