"GCB" earned poor ratings last season, resulting in its cancelation from ABC's lineup.

The 2011-2012 season has ended for many popular TV shows. While many will be returning in the fall, just as many brand new shows are being picked up.

Recently, NBC caused quite a commotion when the company waited until the last minute to renew big fan favorites “30 Rock,” “Community,” and “Parks and Recreation.”

All three were ultimately renewed, but “30 Rock” and “Community” will have shortened seasons of only 13 episodes. This also will be the final season for “30 Rock.” “Parks and Recreation” will have a full 22-episode season.

ABC’s comedy “GCB,” caused quite a controversy and was accused of negatively portraying conservative Christian women. It was canceled due to its lackluster ratings.

Even shows with a very enthusiastic and loyal fan base, such as “30 Rock,” receive low ratings compared to competition or reality shows. On NBC, “30 Rock,” “Community” and “Parks and Recreation” lose out to the sky-high ratings of the singing competition reality show, “The Voice.”

Television networks use the ratings of their shows to sell advertisements. Companies want to put their ads on networks that have the most people watching, so when a network has low ratings for a show, it gets less money from advertisers.

NBC hopes that by bringing in a slew of new shows, it will be able to increase its ratings and thus the amount of money it will receive from advertisers.

The majority of these new shows are half-hour comedies with a few hourlong dramas.
