Camp Crimson helps incoming freshmen drop any leftover high school cool. These future Sooners start to earn their college stripes with enthusiasm and spirit typically expected from Camp Crimson campers.

Zumba, dodge ball and a host of opportunities to dance, mingle and play games met Camp Crimson attendees Thursday during Stuff at the Huff.

The event allows campers to sample the activities offered at the Huston Huffman Center, and Sooner Session campers brought their high energy with them to end the day right, said Shelby Stiner, a veteran small-group leader and journalism junior.

“These campers are more pumped than usual,” Stiner said. “It makes me believe that OU is doing a great job at getting people excited about coming here in the fall before they even get to camp.”

Day one hasn’t only been a big one for the campers, however. This was the rookie year for all the small-group leaders from the class of 2015, and they were just as excited as the campers — if not more excited — for camp to kick off.

Watching the new staff members is just as rewarding as watching the campers, said Patrick Voltin, veteran small-group leader and communications junior.

“I love watching the rookies come into camp," Voltin said." Once they get out into the spirit tunnel and the campers start showing up, it hits them — they’re small-group leaders."

Hunter Cole, freshman from Tulsa in the Monnet small group, said the experience is tiring but energizing.

While some freshmen soaked up the camp environment, others were already looking ahead to the fall semester.

Jessica Dillard, freshman from Norman in the Monnet small group, said she already has football season planned out.

“Tickets come out Aug. 13. It’ll be in the middle of rush, but I’ll be getting my tickets at midnight,” Dillard said. “I’m bringing my iPad, I am so excited for this.”

For campers and many of the staff members, Camp Crimson becomes a 2 1/2 day high-adrenaline sprint, but for crew members, it’s a summer-long marathon, said Danny Wyatt, human resource management junior.

“This summer is my first Camp Crimson experience, and I love it,” Wyatt said. “It’s taken me two years, but I’ve finally found my true niche here at OU. I’ve found my home. And that just makes me love every second of this much more.”
