OU women's gymnastics to face first of five top-10 opponents
by   |  January 12, 2012  |

To be the best, you have to beat the best, and Oklahoma will have plenty of chances this season.

After dispatching No. 23 Kentucky — along with Bowling Green and Wisconsin-Oshkosh — in Lexington, Ky., last weekend, the OU women's gymnastics team will face No. 7 Oregon State, the second of 10 opponents this season ranked in the preseason top 25, on Friday in Corvallis, Ore.

OU's talent-filled schedule this year also includes meets against No. 1 UCLA, No. 2 Alabama, No. 6 Nebraska, No. 10 Michigan, No. 11 Arkansas, No. 18 Ohio State, No. 22 Minnesota and No. 24 Iowa State.

The Sooners, without key competitor Natasha Kelley, stepped up without the junior All-American at the Kentucky Classic in their season opener. Junior Brie Olson captured the bars title and shared the titles on vault and floor with teammates Sara Stone and Kayla Nowak, respectively. Senior Megan Ferguson completed the Sooner sweep by winning the beam title.

Olson's performance earned her Big 12 Event Specialist of the Week honors. Sooner newcomers Rebecca Clark, Lara Albright and Erica Brewer also had solid opening performances.

Oklahoma will face its toughest test of this young season Friday against the Beavers, which return three gymnasts who combined for six All-American honors last year. Senior Olivia Vivian, who finished sixth on bars in the NCAA individual event finals last season, anchors the trio with junior three-time All-American Makayla Stambaugh and senior Leslie Mak, who earned first-team All-American honors for all-around and beam.

The fourth-ranked Sooners have won the last six meetings against Oregon State, including a quad-meet victory last season. Friday's contest will be the Beavers' season opener.

The meet begins at 9 p.m. Central time, and fans can watch a free webcast here.
