Middle East lecture addresses recent cultural, intellectual renaissance

A lecture entitled “Museums in the 21st Century: New Audiences and Old Values in the Gulf” will be held at 6 p.m. today in the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art.

Roger Mandle, executive director of the Qatar Museums Authority, will host the lecture, according to a press release.

Mandle will address the recent cultural and intellectual renaissance in the Middle East and the future plans of many Gulf nations during his lecture, according to a press release.

Mandle served as associate director and then director of the Toledo Museum of Art from 1974 to 1988, deputy director and chief curator of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. from 1988 to 1993, and president of the Rhode Island School of Design from 1993 to 2008, according to a press release.

The lecture is intended to connect students across disciplines and departments, Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art director Ghislain d’Humières said.
