OU to host speech, debate tournament this weekend
by   |  February 10, 2012  |

Sooners will try to beat the buzzer to make their argument at a speech and debate tournament on campus this weekend.

The Sooner Speech Team partnered with West Texas University Forensics team to host the tournament, which begins at 2 p.m. in Burton Hall.

At least 20 teams from states such as Wyoming, Kentucky, Kansas, Texas and Nebraska will be at the event, according to the Sooner Speech Team.

For the last 20 years OU has hosted this tournament, the Sweetheart Swing, near Valentine’s Day, said Garret Castleberry, communications department director of forensics.

“There are always hearts, candy and fun stuff. ... It’s just a fun thing from different schools,” Castleberry said.

Debaters will participate in Lincoln-Douglas and Parliamentary style debates today, according to a press release. The tournament will continue with 11 individual speech competitions beginning at 7:15 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The event is open to the public, and updates on the event will be posted on twitter.com/@soonerspeech.
