Ben Williams, The Oklahoma Daily
Junior guard Aaryn Ellenberg tries to get by a defender during OU's game against Marist Sunday, December 2nd, 2012, in the Lloyd Noble Center. The Sooners won 68-55 to improve to 7-1 for the season.
The OU women’s basketball team won its hardest fought battle of the season to date, taking down Marist, 68-55, Sunday in Norman.
How the Sooners won: The Sooners outlasted the Red Foxes, showing off their superior conditioning and pulling away in the final eight minutes to pull off the win despite a poor shooting performance.
Key stat: Six blocks. OU blocked six of Marist's shots, often derailing transition plays.
Key performer: Senior guard Whitney Hand had one of the best all-around performances in recent memory, scoring 12 points, grabbing 13 rebounds, dishing five assists blocking three shots and snagging one steal. Hand led the team and game in rebounds assists and blocks.
Key opponent: Junior forward Emma O'Connor scored a team-high 18 points for Marist, shooting 66 percent from the field.
What it means: The Sooners are finding themselves. In a game that OU could only muster 42.2 percent from the field and 26.1 percent from 3, they still find a way to win. That ability will serve them well in a tough Big 12 schedule.
