Student Congress votes down cell phone ban, welcomes TCU
by   |  October 20, 2011  |

Student Congress failed to pass a ban prohibiting the use of cell phones at meetings Tuesday night.

Atmospheric and Geographic Sciences representative Steve Sichterman brought an act before Student Congress that would add to the Code Annotated a restriction on the use of electronic communication devices by UOSA members during official meetings.

The bill received opposition by some, including UOSA president Hannah Morris, because of concerns about how it would be regulated and enforced. According to the author, it would be have been done by the different bodies themselves.

By a vote of 10-11-6, the act failed to pass; however, representative Sichterman said that he will author more legislation on this issue in the near future.

Several pieces of additional legislation were presented to the Student Congress, two of which added questions to the fall 2011 UOSA election ballot.

International Areas studies representative Shayna Daitch introduced legislation that would make it easier for UOSA to change districts to reflect changes in college names.

“In order to represent the student body effectively, we need to be able to ensure that districts have accurate representation,” Daitch said.

A second question added to the 2011 UOSA election ballot was presented by Social Science representative Clarence Cooper regarding the impending smoking ban and the creation of designated smoking zones.

A resolution also was passed to welcome TCU to the Big 12.

“While we are rivals, we look forward to working with the TCU student government now that they are in the Big 12,” vice chairwoman Kelbie Kennedy said.
