Everyone suggests doing certain activities on campus before graduating from OU. But really, what are the top 15 things to do before that graduation speech comes in four, or five, years?
15. Attend the Norman Music Festival
There’s Groovefest, Dustbowl Arts Market, Norman Music Festival (NOMF), Medieval Fair . . . Get your bottom off campus and go have some local Norman fun. You’ll dance and tie-dye at Groovefest, marvel at local art at Dustbowl and get sunburned at NOMF. But, you’ll rock your face off and build great stories. Remember that one time . . .
14. Take cheesy photos with campus statues
From “The Thinker” to the “Seed Sower,” take a goofy picture with the campus statues to commemorate your time at OU. A plus, some of the statues move around campus over the years with myths following the legacy they leave. Did you know the artists of the red eye horse statue died when one of his sculptures collapsed on top of him?
13. Visit Crossroads at midnight
Crossroads in the Oklahoma Memorial Union is open 24/7. Visit in the middle of the night for ideal people-watching, great late-night food and friendly staff who crack jokes with student regulars.
12. See a movie at the Warren
Go ahead, splurge and see a film at the first theatre in the world to use all Digital Cinema and THX technology, according to Warren’s website. Feeling your feet vibrate while watching a horror flick is pretty epic, after all.
11. Swim in a fountain
According to the 2009 Campus profile, OU has 16 fountains on campus, calling your name on a hot Oklahoma day. Go ahead, pick out your favorite and take a late night dive. It feels good to be rebellious.
“We went after Foam party one night,” says Chelsea Galligher, a freshman from Skiatook. “We didn’t want to get sprayed of with the hose so we jumped. My favorite fountain is by the Union because it’s really warm.”
10. Start a chant
There’s nothing like screaming “Boomer!” into a crowd on game days. Go ahead, start a “Boomer! Sooner!” chant to get the crowd pumping.
9. Visit every building on campus
The buildings are there whether you use them or not: Why not explore? You are paying for the architecture after all. Take advantage. You’ll expose yourself to pocket cultures and fun OU facts. Did you know Sarkeys has mile markers on some floors? Or that campus buildings are designed after Harvard and other Ivy League colleges? Seriously, go spend your free time just meandering around campus. This includes OU’s museums such as the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art and the Sam Noble Museum.
8. Study in the stadium
The stadium is home to students during off season, too. Climb stadium steps or jog around the field, but don’t step on the field or you’ll set off an alarm. Not the athletic type? Take your books and lounge taking in some fresh air and the stadium’s ambiance.
7. Skip class
Skip at least one class during your college career. You may be wasting your tuition money, but a beautiful day spent on the South Oval can recharge your energy and who knows, it may prolong your life. Lounge on the Oval, play Frisbee by the Visitor’s Center, spend the day shopping or lounging in your room cuddling with your DVR. Just skip already.
6. Visit Campus Corner
Campus Corner is home to food, shopping and the best game day party in town.
“It’s fun to party after the game, to celebrate an OU victory on Campus Corner,” says Michael Petersen, finance accounting junior. “There’s lots of great food and entertainment all night.”
5. It’s all Drama
See an OU Production. Your peers run the show and they do a pretty damn good job. Productions are inexpensive and last at least a couple of hours.
“Where else do you have the opportunity to see live theatre at a low cost?” says Katie Knutter, women and gender studies and political science senior. “OU has one of the oldest theatre departments and they put time and energy into their productions.”
4. Eavesdrop on a conversation
There is always scandal. Did you hear she broke up with him? He got smashed at the weekend’s date party. She did the walk of shame on Greek row. Yaddi Yaddi Yadda . . . Walk the South Oval and listen to the people’s conversation behind you or listen to the two hotties next to you in class discuss their weekend. Campus eavesdropping is a reality soap opera, like the sands of time through an hourglass.
3. Sled by the Huff on snow days
Snow in Oklahoma is rare. But, when it snows, it snows. Bundle up on a free snow-day and take advantage of the mini-slope by the Huston Huffman Fitness Center. Cardboard boxes, trash can lids, notebooks covers; you’ll see all types of make-shift sleds on the hill.
2. Nap on a couch
Take advantage of all the comfy couches at OU. They’re great for naps, I mean studying . . . they’re great for studying. Beaird Lounge in the Oklahoma Memorial Union, Bizzell Memorial Library, Sarkeys basement, Gaylord College, the Towers: all have super comfy napping couches for students who have spare time between classes or are just too lazy to head back to their own beds.
1. OU/Texas
Go to an OU/Texas Red River Rivalry game at least once. It’s a religious experience. Even if you don’t go to the game, go for the fried Fair Food. Fried coke, anyone?
