Preview of series' first opera will take place Tuesday
by   |  October 11, 2011  |

A free preview for the first opera of this year’s Noon Concert Series will be performed at noon today before the entire opera opens Wednesday.

The OU School of Music and the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art will host the preview performance from the opera “The Coronation of Poppea” at noon in the museum.

The featured performance, directed by Jonathan Shames, is a preview of the full-length opera, which will run at 8 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and at 3 p.m. Sunday.

“It’s a great way to start lunch, with a free concert ... and the art galleries are all open,” museum spokesman Michael Bendure said.

“The Coronation of Poppea” is a dramatic opera in which “a mistress to Nero, Poppea, manipulates her way to seize the throne and the title of Empress of Imperial Rome,” said William Ferrara, opera theater stage director.

The preview is a mix of opera in an intimate setting, Ferrara said.

All Tuesday Noon Concerts are 30 minutes long .
