The Oklahoma volleyball team continues to show that it is more seasoned and battle ready than in the past, grinding out a five-set win against the Texas Tech Red Raiders, 3-2 (22-25, -16, 18-25, -19, 17-15), on Saturday in Lubbock.
Texas Tech had game point twice in the decisive fifth set at 14-13 and 15-14, but the Sooners staved off both points and ran off three straight points to take the match. OU is now 3-1 in five-set matches this season.
The Sooners were led offensively by a double-double from freshman outside hitter Tara Dunn, her second straight double-double. Dunn had 21 kills and a career-high 15 digs in the match.
Senior setter Brianne Barker had a career high 59 assists, adding 19 digs as she commanded the offense to a .218 hit percentage.
Three other Sooners had double-digit kills, led by senior right side Suzy Boulavsky’s 17. Sophomore middle blocker Sallie McLaurin had 12, and junior outside hitter Morgan Reynolds added 10.
The Sooner defense was stellar throughout the match with five players gathering double-digit digs. Junior defensive specialist María Fernanda led the team with 28, and sophomore defensive specialists Mindy Gowen and Eden Williams had 15 and 12, respectively.
Amanda Dowdy led Texas Tech with 18 kills and 28 digs.
Each set was decisive in its own right with only one lead change in each of the first four sets. The latest that the teams exchanged leads was in the third set, when Texas Tech took the lead after an 8-8 tie en route to a 25-18 set win.
The fifth set had three lead changes alone.
The Sooners return home Wednesday to take on Missouri at McCasland Field House. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
