Construction to detour students during summer, fall
by   |  May 23, 2011  |

Students are likely to encounter detours when traveling down Lindsey Street due to construction during the summer and throughout the fall that will widen the street, a city official said.

There are two street construction projects planned around OU this summer, including closing part of Lindsey Street and a section of Jenkins Avenue, said Greg Hall Norman street superintendent. Students will probably use detours down Jenkins, Brooks and Classen streets, Hall said.

“We do our best to schedule activities that are located near school locations to the summer months if at all possible,” Hall said.

While the construction is planned to begin during the summer, the project will be major and it will be going on when students return to school in the fall, Hall said. The planned project is scheduled to take 18 months to compete, Hall said. When football season comes, all efforts will be taken to provide the best road access possible to students and visitors on game day, Hall said.

One month of this construction will be devoted to constructing a new drainage structure adjacent to the Duck Pond and will close off through-access from Jenkins Avenue to Classen Boulevard, Hall said.

If everything goes according to plan, eastbound traffic access should be allowed to people travelling to neighborhood streets. All traffic will be diverted for westbound traffic from Classen Boulevard, Hall said.

“Upon completion of this phase, work will progress on other parts of the widening project under traffic. It is likely that other closures will be required during the project that will take over a year to complete. This does mean that returning students in the fall will be experiencing the construction,” Hall said.

The second, more minor construction project scheduled to take place during the summer months is expected to only take one to two weeks to complete, Hall said.

This project will repave Jenkins Avenue between Lindsey Street and East Constitution Street, Hall said.

“For students and citizens who remain in Norman throughout the year, it is very helpful for them to watch for closure and construction notices and follow detour routes or find other alternative routes to their destinations,” Hall said.

18 months? That's a hell of a long time to close one of the most heavily traveled roads into campus. That's frustrating.
