OU women lose to Aggies for third time
by   |  March 11, 2011  |

OU is 0-3 against Texas A&M this season after losing to the Aggies, 81-68, in the semifinals of the Big 12 tournament Friday afternoon.

Despite the Sooners' loss, senior guard Danielle Robinson had 19 points and seven assists, joining Nancy Lieberman and Dawn Staley as the only players in women's basketball history to total 2,000 points, 700 assists and 300 steals.

Sophomore Whitney Hand had an impressive afternoon as well with 21 points on 7-of-17 shooting.

Even with strong performances from Hand and Robinson, it wasn’t enough Friday.

The last time the Sooners played Texas A&M, the Aggies throttled the Sooners early and often. This time around, OU avoided being pushed around early.

OU lead the Aggies 14-13 with 12 minutes to play, but Aggie senior forward Danielle Adams led Texas A&M back.

With five minutes to play in the first half, Texas A&M took a 28-20 lead. Texas A&M dominated the Sooners on the offensive boards, pulling down 12 in the half.

OU faced two self-inflicted first-half hurdles — turnovers and fouls.

The Sooners committed 13 turnovers resulting in 17 points off turnovers for Texas A&M.

Fouls were the second problem for OU with freshman guard Aaryn Ellenberg picking up three fouls, and three starters for OU on the bubble with two.

OU went on a 6-0 run with under three minutes to play in the first half, but the Aggies carried a 36-29 lead into halftime.

Out of the half, OU quickly cut the Aggie lead to two, 43-41, but that was as close of the Sooners would get in the second half.

The 3-point shot began to fall for Texas A&M, resulting in a 13-point lead, 54-41.

Each time OU started a run, the Aggies thwarted it. Aggie junior guard Sydney White downed 11 consecutive points to give Texas A&M the 67-52 advantage.

Texas A&M slowed the game with five minutes left, making it difficult for OU to mount an offensive attack to chip away at the lead.

With two minutes to play, OU closed within seven, 75-68, on a 9-0 run, but the Sooners simply ran out of time.

Oklahoma finished the game shooting 44 percent, and totaling 20 turnovers. Most of the Sooners played through the foul trouble, but Ellenberg did foul out late in the second half.
