Two construction projects on Norman roads will impact drivers near the OU campus, but they are not expected to affect traffic during football game days this fall, the project manager said.
Northeast 12th Avenue from Main Street to Robinson Street will be narrowed to one lane starting today as part of the city's annual sewer-repair-and-replacement project, project manager Charlie Thomas said. Every year, 22,000 to 26,000 feet of sewer is replaced or refurbished, Thomas said.
The project will take two to three days, depending on weather conditions, and the lane will be closed to traffic through the weekend to let the concrete cure, Thomas said.
A simultaneous construction project will widen a quarter-mile stretch of East Lindsey Street and 12th Avenue from two to four lanes in an effort to ease traffic during football season, public works director Shawn O'Leary said.
Lindsey Street will be shut down to through traffic starting July 5 for a 28-day period. Although construction work will continue, the street will reopen in early August — well before football season begins in September — to ensure fans are not heavily impacted, O'Leary said.
The $5.4 million widening project will not be finished until about this time next year, O'Leary said. Additions to Lindsey Street will include decorative light poles and 10-foot bike and hike sidewalks, he said.
“Like any construction zone, it will be messy and probably less than desirable for some drivers, but as far as game day goes, we think there will be very little direct impact,” O’Leary said.
