OU baseball stopped in extra innings by Dallas Baptist
by   |  June 3, 2011  |

It was deja vu for the No. 2-seeded Oklahoma Sooners on Friday in Fort Worth as they dropped their first game in regional action, 3-2 in 10 innings, to the Dallas Baptist Patriots.

The Sooners played the Patriots in a midweek game April 19 in Norman and lost by the same score. Senior starting pitcher Brandon Williams started both games for Dallas Baptist.

With senior ace Michael Rocha starting for the Sooners, runs came at a premium. Both pitchers duked it out in a pitcher’s duel for the prize of advancing in the regional winner’s bracket.

Rocha pitched 7.1 innings, allowing just one run off five hits. He battled through the game, throwing 104 pitches in the Texas heat, which hit 109 degrees, according to the centerfield scoreboard.

Rocha allowed the lone run in the top of the first but settled down to pitch yet another solid game.

The Sooners once again fell prey to squandering early opportunities to score runs.

OU had chances in the second and third innings with runners reaching scoring position in both, but junior rightfielder Cody Reine struck out with junior designated hitter Evan Mistich on third to end the second.

In the third, junior catcher Tyler Ogle lined into an inning-ending double play with runners on second and first to end the scoring threat.

DBU’s Williams pitched a solid game, going nine innings while allowing two runs off just seven hits and striking out seven. He picked up the win with his stout performance.

OU coach Sunny Golloway mishandled the end-game situation that could have put Oklahoma in the winner’s bracket.

Freshman reliever Dillon Overton started the ninth inning for the Sooners to close things out for the win. Overton — not the all-time saves leader for the program, Ryan Duke — was called to close the game.

Overton relived Rocha in the eighth, striking out the dangerous Jason Krizan, the NCAA leader for doubles. He then got the next Dallas Baptist hitter to pop out to Ellis to preserve OU’s one-run lead — 2-1 at the time.

Overton allowed a lead-off single in the ninth to put the tying man on. That runner advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by catcher Duncan McAlpine.

Duke then came in to try to shut the door on Overton's situation. Duke got his first batter to fly out to center, but Austin Elkins tied the game at two with a single to right.

The Sooners were able to get the tying man in scoring position in the bottom of the tenth, but Evan Mistich struck out looking, putting the Sooners in the loser’s bracket.

Oklahoma will face the loser of the TCU-Oral Roberts game at 2 p.m. Saturday.
