Two Sooner commits for the 2012 class are listed as top high school football recruits in Oklahoma, according to a feature in The Oklahoman.
Running back Alex Ross of Jenks and wide receiver Sterling Shepard of Heritage Hall were ranked No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, in the newspaper's list of the top 30 in-state prep players. Shepard's teammate, Barry Sanders Jr., is ranked No. 1.
Ross carried the ball 122 times for 1,548 yards and 27 touchdowns for the Jenks Trojans last season. The 6-foot-2 back also scored three touchdowns on pass receptions and three more on kickoff returns, where he averaged more than 40 yards per return for the Class 6A runner-up Trojans.
Shepard — the son of former OU football player Derrick Shepard — scored 34 touchdowns for the Heritage Hall Chargers in 2010. The 5-foot-11 receiver rushed for 571 yards, earned 1,015 yards as a receiver and had three passing touchdowns.
Showing off his versatility, the two-way athlete added 103 tackles and eight interceptions playing defense.
Ross and Shepard both committed to the Sooners after the university offered them a scholarship in February.
National Signing Day for the next recruiting class is Feb. 1, 2012. Until players sign their letter of intent to play at a specific university, all commitments are verbal and non-binding.
